WELCOME

Hey, my name's Paul, and over the years I've grown to be very passionate about hip hop. When I first started listening to hip hop, it wasn't long before I was able to distinguish the differences between underground and mainstream, and that has been a topic of many conversations I've had (although I probably did most of the talking). It also wasn't long before I realized that a lot of "hip hop fans" only knew what they were hearing on the radio and were pretty much completely unaware of any artists outside of the mainstream circle. So I've made it a point to share as many underground artists with people as I possibly could, and to this day I do the same.

This is a required blog for a journalism course I'm taking this semester, but I figured it would be the best opportunity to have a formal setting in which to share these artists and other aspects of hip hop culture that most people may have missed by spending too much time listening to the radio. This blog will explore the differences between underground and mainstream hip hop, and will be heavily focused on making a case for how mainstream hip hop (or "radio rap") is destroying hip hop culture. It will be very opinionated and extremely biased, but hopefully I'll be able to make my case as professionally and maturely as possible. In addition, over the course of this blog I will be suggesting artists, albums, and songs you should be listening to instead of the latest Lil' Wayne feature or anything by Soulja Boy.

I hope you enjoy.
